Sharing The Passion…

Becoming a full-time Registered Maine guide has certainly been an adventure in itself. Meeting exciting people, developing lasting relationships and sharing extraordinary experiences has been the highlight in my career thus far. Being asked to join the list of quality contributors in Northwoods Sporting Journal has been an honor and privilege. The journey that has led me to this point is certainly something I will cherish for the rest of my days. The experience and message I have hopefully taught my two daughters are to go after what lies in their hearts and fuels their passion. I will continue to share my passion and follow my dreams with the help of my wife, friends, and colleagues. For all this and much more, I am truly blessed and grateful. A special “Thank You” to the folks at Northwoods Sporting Journal for giving me the opportunity to share some outdoor experiences and knowledge I have been fortunate to have known in my life.

Extended Ice Fishing….Good or Bad?

This year is an exception for a prolonged ice fishing season. For as long as I can remember the season has never been extended. So is it safe? There is today on most northern lakes 1 -2 feet of ice. Everyone feels safe on that kind of ice but wait… Let me tell you about a concern on our last trip. We left at our usual 5:00am for another ice fishing adventure. When we arrived at our put in everything looked closed in without a hint of melting. As we fished all day it was always riding in back of my mind, “I wonder what the shore line looks now as the outside ambient temps approached 50 def”. After fishing all day it was time to exit the ice. As we approached the edge to our amazement the edge was open and was questionable if I was able to exit the same way I went on! Luckily I am equipped with winch and Nebulus.

We exited without event and were on our way. I consider myself lucky with the trip and took away a valuable lesson. The first time and hopefully the last time we will encounter such a situation!  So be mindful out there…. just because you can does not always mean you should. Ice fishers should always be careful of changing ice conditions. Always look for shaded areas away from inlets, outlets, and springs and in general, soft ice.

Thankful for an awesome ice fishing season with many laughs, memories and nice fish caught. Have fun, be a good sportsman and above all stay safe!

Tight Lines, Rich

2017 Sport Shows a Huge Success!

Thank you to everyone for a great show season. We were very happy to be able and get out to visit all our friends including our Sports, Colleagues, and Promoters. We enjoyed supporting our partners… The Maine Highlands, Daddy Mac Lures, NuCast, Excel Outdoors, Jiffy Drills, Dexter Outdoors, Flex Spex, Tauten Sports, Coastal Angler – Boston and G3 Boats!

Our seminars went well as we promoted the State of Maine and All we have to offer in the out of doors! Our seminar ” The Maine Event” was filled with Maine fishing, hunting and recreation.

We are back at the guiding in Maine’s hard water and looking forward to our annual ice out. Our ice fishing this year has been awesome with some good fish caught. As we finish up the hard water  season down east, we will host two more trips before wrapping up out gear and start prepping the boats. We are so happy to bring on Nebulus, Jiffy Drills and Excel Outdoors to our line up of quality sponsors. We know that these folks are top in the outdoor field! They will add value to our operation and customers delivering only the best products with wonderful customer service. Thank You!

Typically in Maine Ice Out starts in April and by the beginning of May, all the lakes and ponds are ready to start their open water season. Anglers from all over the state are itching to get their lines wet and partake in an annual ritual of Ice Out. To some, this time of year is almost as special as Thanksgiving!
